Landscaping gets written off as low risk work, right up until you look at one day properly. A mini digger cutting a terrace before smoko. Silica dust exposure from a concrete saw after it. Then a retaining wall going in hard against a boundary, with the neighbour’s shed sitting on the high side of it.

Plenty of that is High-Risk Construction Work (HRCW) under the WHS Regulations, and any builder running a residential or commercial site will want your SWMS before you unload. These SWMS cover the work landscapers actually do rather than a generic construction document with the trade name swapped in. They arrive via instant download as fully editable Microsoft Word (.docx) files. The high-risk construction work in landscaping that needs a SWMS

Excavation is the one people forget they’re doing. Footings for a wall count. So does a drainage run, and so does the trench around a new pool, and anything past 1.5 metres needs shoring or battering plus an inspection before anyone climbs in. Underground services sit right underneath most landscaping work, which is why an irrigation trench near a meter box deserves a Dial Before You Dig enquiry and a bit of hand digging before the trencher starts. Excavators and skid steer loaders are powered mobile plant, so the exclusion zone matters even when the machine is small and the yard is smaller. Retaining walls over a metre or so, and split-level blocks generally, put you into work where a person could fall more than two metres, which brings edge protection and barriers into the document. Work near a road adds traffic control. Old fibro sheds and fence sheeting are an asbestos problem long before they’re a demolition problem. Chainsaw and stump grinder work carries its own hazards, and none of them are subtle.
