View full detailsMonday it’s installing guttering. Wednesday it’s a rotten deck board and a sticking door. Friday somebody wants a wall tiled and the old sheeting pulled out first. A handyman meets more different hazards in a week than most specialist trades meet in a month, and that is the entire problem with the single generic document people go looking for. There’s no honest way to write one SWMS that covers gutter cleaning off a ladder and stripping floor coverings in a 1970s unit. The hazards aren’t related and neither are the controls.

Whatever the job is. That’s the honest answer, and it’s why the trade gets caught out. Falls are the most common exposure: ladders at guttering height, work off a low roof, and a step platform on uneven ground in a back yard. Past two metres it’s High-Risk Construction Work (HRCW) regardless of how quick the task looks. Demolition and strip-out is next, because pulling out a bathroom wall or old vinyl in a house built before 1990 puts you in front of possible asbestos in the sheeting, and often in the adhesive under the vinyl as well. That has to be identified before anything gets cut or broken. Fixing into walls and ceilings means live cabling until it’s proven otherwise. Ceiling spaces bring heat and restricted access, plus the fair chance of a foot through the plasterboard. Cutting fibre cement or grinding tiles releases silica dust that needs water suppression or dust extraction, not an open window. Then there’s the everyday load: carrying sheets alone, handling hazardous substances, and the fact that a domestic property has no site rules at all unless you bring them with you.

Being a smaller company we required an easy to implement safety system which would fit our individual needs. My “day job” is risk & workplace safety officer with a large company. I am keenly aware of the requirements for Safety Management Systems but do not have the time to develop this myself.
