Nobody puts tiling near the top of the dangerous trades list. It’s quiet, precise work, and on most days the worst injury is a cut thumb or a sore knee. The silica dust is the part that doesn’t announce itself.

Cutting porcelain or grinding concrete throws respirable crystalline silica straight into the breathing zone, and the particles that do the damage are the ones you never see. That’s why builders ask for tiling SWMS on commercial jobs even when nothing is happening above 2 metres. Twenty-three templates carry the Tiling tag here. Microsoft Word, editable, bought once and used on every job after that.

The high risk construction work in tiling that needs a SWMS

Silica is the big one. Dry cutting, grinding back a screed, chasing a wall, sweeping up afterwards: all of it puts Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) dust in the air, and the controls have to be named rather than implied. Water suppression or on-tool extraction. An H class vacuum instead of a broom. Fit tested respiratory protection for whoever is actually holding the grinder, not a box of dust masks in the ute.

Wet area work brings other hazards. Membranes and primers are often solvent based, the room is small, and ventilation in a bathroom mid fit-out is whatever the open door gives you. Epoxy grouts and some adhesives are skin sensitisers, so glove selection and the SDS belong in the SWMS. Then there’s the body. Tilers kneel for hours, lift 900 x 900 porcelain that two people should be carrying, and hump boxes up stairs before the lift is commissioned. Manual handling is where the long term cost sits, and it’s usually the section that gets one lazy line.

In anything built before the early 1990s, floor levellers, old vinyl backing and sheeting behind wall tiles can contain asbestos. That alone triggers High-Risk Construction Work (HRCW) under the WHS Regulations. Identify it before you break the existing surface up.

What’s in the Tiling SWMS Collection?

The Tiling SWMS collection carries 23 documents which can all be viewed above and in the Tiling SWMS Pack. One group is the tiling and wet area work itself, screeding and waterproofing included. Another is the cutting and dust gear that goes with it, the grinders, the vacuums and the RCS dust control document a commercial builder will look for. The rest are the general documents asked of many subcontractors, covering tools, chemicals, manual handling, height access and vehicles. They come as fully editable Microsoft Word (.docx) files, with the hazards and controls already written, so the editing is mostly cutting what doesn’t apply and adding the detail of the job in front of you.

One SWMS or the whole pack?

Plenty of tilers on domestic work need three or four documents and nothing else. If you’re subcontracting to a builder who requires SWMS for all tiling activities, the Tiling SWMS Pack is the best value: all 23 documents and a saving of 50% Off the individual prices, one payment, used on unlimited jobs.

Why Choose Occupational Safety Solutions?

15+ years and 15,000+ customers → We've been helping small and medium construction and trade businesses get their SWMS sorted since 2010. Our templates reflect real-world experience across the trades we serve - not generic documents assembled at a desk.

Pre-written and ready to use → Every SWMS template comes pre-filled with the hazards, risks, and control measures typical for that task and trade. You're not starting from a blank page - the hard work is already done. In most cases it's far quicker to delete what doesn't apply to your specific site than to research and write it yourself.

Legally compliant → Our SWMS templates are prepared in accordance with the Model WHS Regulations (Schedule 3), Safe Work Australia Codes of Practice and relevant Australian Standards. They're structured to meet all the requirements of a compliant SWMS - so you can use them with confidence on site, in tenders, and in audits.

Fully editable in Microsoft Word → Everything is supplied in .docx format. Add your company and site details, adjust the control measures to reflect your specific conditions if required, and you're done. No software subscriptions, no locked PDFs.

Pay once, use on every job → No ongoing fees, no per-project charges. Purchase a template once and use it across unlimited sites, projects, and tenders. When we update documents, existing customers receive discounts on revised versions.

Free phone and email support → When you purchase from us you get access to the same people who built the documents - not a call centre, not a chatbot. If you're unsure how to customise a SWMS for your specific site conditions, or a principal contractor is asking questions you can't answer, call 1800 304 336 and we'll help you work through it.

Honest advice → If you need one SWMS, we'll sell you one SWMS. If an industry pack makes more sense for your situation, we'll tell you that too. We're not here to push you toward the most expensive option - we're here to help you end up with the right documents for your actual needs.

As a small-medium business, we recently went through a period of accelerated growth and along with that came the need to update our existing WHS system to something much more robust.

Occupational Safety Solutions helped bring our documentation up to speed and provided guidance to ensure we are aligned with best practice for all of our WHS processes and procedures. Andrew has come to the rescue more than once when we needed new or refined documents for specific tenders and updated Safe Work Method Statements.
