Chippies spend more of the day above 2 metres than almost anyone else on a residential build. Wall frames, roof trusses, fascia, stair voids with no balustrade in them yet. Every one of those is a fall risk over the threshold that makes the work High-Risk Construction Work (HRCW), and the WHS Regulations want the SWMS done before the first bearer goes down.

The high-risk construction work in carpentry that needs a SWMS

Falls of more than 2 metres. That’s the headline one, and on a two storey frame it applies from the moment the first floor joists are down. Void protection and perimeter scaffold. Roof anchors rated for the load and installed by someone competent to do it.

Structural work is the second. Any alteration that needs temporary bracing or propping to stop something collapsing sits in the high risk category. Removing a load-bearing wall in a renovation is exactly this, and so is stripping out a section of roof structure before the new tie-in goes on.

Demolition of a load-bearing element is on the same list. So is anything likely to disturb asbestos, which on a pre-1990 fit-out means the eaves sheeting and whatever is sitting behind the old wet area lining.

Nail guns aren’t a listed HRCW category, but they put carpenters in hospital more than most tools on site. Never carry one with your finger on the trigger and never disable the contact tip. You’d think that goes without saying.
