Most electrical work on a live site sits inside the High-Risk Construction Work (HRCW) definition and often hits more than one category at once. Work near energised electrical installations or services is on the list. So is confined space work. So is trenching deeper than 1.5 metres for underground mains. The WHS Regulations require the SWMS before the work starts, not written up on Friday afternoon for the file.

The high-risk construction work in electrical that needs a SWMS

The one that comes up daily is work on or near energised electrical installations or services. Isolate, lock, prove the tester on a known live source, test the conductors, then prove the tester again. Test before you touch. Who holds the key, where the tag goes, who is allowed to remove it: that belongs in the SWMS in writing, with names.

Ceiling spaces bring their own problems. Heat, no light, brittle battens, and in anything before 1990 a fair chance of asbestos behind a meter panel. Risers are harder again, because you’ve got a vertical shaft and potentially other trades working above you.

Underground work is third. Trenching for mains and submains past 1.5 metres is high risk construction work on its own, before you even ask what else is buried in that trench. Dial Before You Dig, then pothole by hand near the marks.

Height covers the rest. Cable tray at 5 metres using an elevated work platform, or solar panel installations on a metal roof.

What’s in the Electrical SWMS Collection?
