Hot work is the task a principal contractor or client will always ask about, and fair enough. A spark can sit smouldering in a rag or a wall cavity for half an hour before anyone smells it, by which time the crew has packed up and driven off. Welding on a construction site is High-Risk Construction Work (HRCW), so the WHS Regulations require a SWMS before the work starts. Not written up afterwards for an auditor.

All our SWMS templates are pre-written and fully editable. Supplied via instant download as Microsoft Word (.docx) documents, fill in the site details, edit the controls if required to suit the job, and hand over at induction. One payment covers you for every job after that. No subscription and no ongoing fees.

The high-risk construction work in welding that needs a SWMS

Fire comes first. Hot work on most sites needs a permit, a cleared radius, screens or blankets over anything that burns, an extinguisher within arm’s reach and a fire watch that stays put after the last arc. Sparks travel further than people expect, particularly down a riser or through an unsealed penetration.

Fume is the one that catches up with you slowly. Welding fume is classified as a carcinogen, so on top of the general ventilation you need local exhaust at the arc and a respirator that suits the job. Galvanised steel throws off zinc oxide and a night of metal fume fever. Stainless brings hexavalent chromium into it. Manganese in the consumable is its own problem, and none of it improves inside a tank.

Radiation is next. Arc flash burns the cornea, and the bloke walking past without a helmet cops it as readily as the welder, which is what screens are for. UV burns exposed skin through a thin shirt.

Confined and enclosed spaces need their own controls. Argon and CO2 shielding gas is heavier than air and pools in the bottom of a tank, quietly displacing the oxygen. Add electric shock from damp gloves and a poorly earthed return lead, cylinder security, flashback arrestors on the oxy set and grinding sparks.

What’s in the Welding SWMS Collection?

The Welding SWMS collection carries 30 documents which can all be viewed above and in the Welding SWMS Pack. Hot Works, Arc Welder and Confined Spaces are examples of what’s in there, and the collection runs well past the ones anybody would think to name. It breaks into the processes themselves, MIG through to TIG, arc, oxy and plasma cutting. Then the grinding, lifting and access work that comes with fabrication, including forklift, crane and elevated work platform documents. Then the general SWMS on chemicals, tools and vehicles. Every SWMS is fully editable, so the controls can be modified if required to suit unique sites or varying client requirements.

One SWMS or the whole pack?

You can purchase individual welding SWMS templates if that’s all you need. Workshops that fabricate and install usually want the Welding SWMS Pack: all 30 documents and a saving of 65% Off the individual prices, one payment, used on as many jobs as you like, no subscription.

Why Choose Occupational Safety Solutions?

15+ years and 15,000+ customers → We've been helping small and medium construction and trade businesses get their SWMS sorted since 2010. Our templates reflect real-world experience across the trades we serve - not generic documents assembled at a desk.

Pre-written and ready to use → Every SWMS template comes pre-filled with the hazards, risks, and control measures typical for that task and trade. You're not starting from a blank page - the hard work is already done. In most cases it's far quicker to delete what doesn't apply to your specific site than to research and write it yourself.

Legally compliant → Our SWMS templates are prepared in accordance with the Model WHS Regulations (Schedule 3), Safe Work Australia Codes of Practice and relevant Australian Standards. They're structured to meet all the requirements of a compliant SWMS - so you can use them with confidence on site, in tenders, and in audits.

Fully editable in Microsoft Word → Everything is supplied in .docx format. Add your company and site details, adjust the control measures to reflect your specific conditions if required, and you're done. No software subscriptions, no locked PDFs.

Pay once, use on every job → No ongoing fees, no per-project charges. Purchase a template once and use it across unlimited sites, projects, and tenders. When we update documents, existing customers receive discounts on revised versions.

Free phone and email support → When you purchase from us you get access to the same people who built the documents - not a call centre, not a chatbot. If you're unsure how to customise a SWMS for your specific site conditions, or a principal contractor is asking questions you can't answer, call 1800 304 336 and we'll help you work through it.

Honest advice → If you need one SWMS, we'll sell you one SWMS. If an industry pack makes more sense for your situation, we'll tell you that too. We're not here to push you toward the most expensive option - we're here to help you end up with the right documents for your actual needs.

As a small-medium business, we recently went through a period of accelerated growth and along with that came the need to update our existing WHS system to something much more robust.

Occupational Safety Solutions helped bring our documentation up to speed and provided guidance to ensure we are aligned with best practice for all of our WHS processes and procedures. Andrew has come to the rescue more than once when we needed new or refined documents for specific tenders and updated Safe Work Method Statements.

OSS are reasonably priced and responsive with fast turn around times. Honestly, we couldn't be happier with the service provided by OSS and would highly recommend to any organisation looking to update their WHS systems.
