View full detailsThere are two jobs inside joinery and cabinet making and they carry different risks. A panel saw and a docking saw may sit under your own roof, where you set the rules. The site you deliver to is not like that. Most joiners get asked for a SWMS by the principal contractor or builder receiving the fit-out, not by anyone inspecting the factory.
Joinery and cabinet making can trigger High-Risk Construction Work (HRCW) categories such as the risk of a person falling more than 2 metres, work on or near energised electrical services, and work in an area that may have a contaminated atmosphere. Any one of those means a SWMS must exist before the work starts.
The SWMS here are fully editable Microsoft Word (.docx) files, written by people who’ve been doing this since 2010 for more than 15,000 Australian businesses. You can edit them, you own them, they can be used on unlimited jobs, and there’s no subscription or ongoing fees.
Start with the machines. A panel saw, a radial arm saw, a band saw and a spindle of any kind are guarded for a reason, and a SWMS that says “use guards” without naming who checks them before start-up isn’t doing much. Push sticks, blade condition, isolation before blade changes and a written rule about who operates what should be documented.
Dust is the quieter problem. Machining MDF, particleboard and hardwood generates wood dust that’s a known carcinogen, and modern compact laminates and stone composite panels add respirable crystalline silica to the mix. Extraction at each machine, filter maintenance, an H class vacuum for clean-up and a clear line on when respirators go on are what an auditor looks for.
Sheet goods are heavy and awkward. A full sheet of 32mm board is a two person lift on flat ground, and nobody lifts on flat ground. Loading racks and carrying tall units up a stairwell are where the shoulders and backs go. Installation adds height work off trestles or mobile scaffold when overhead units and bulkheads go in, plus fixing into walls that may have energised services behind them. Finishing brings solvents into a space that’s rarely ventilated the way the label assumes.
